Can you vape in public (UK Law)?

FICH UK

Vaping involves inhaling vapour produced by electronic cigarettes or vapes as they are commonly known. Vaping is less harmful than traditional smoking, but that does not mean it is without harmful effects.

In the UK, the MHRA is responsible for any regulations regarding e-cigarettes and e-refills. The TRPR requires all electronic cigarettes and refills to meet minimum hygiene, safety, and composition standards.

This policy is to ensure safety for all consumers. Along with this, the TRPR also aims to disseminate information to consumers to make informed choices.

There are several vaping laws and regulations in the UK. These regulations exist to make the public aware of the harmful effects of smoking or vaping and also as a means to try and reduce the sale and purchase of any smoking/tobacco-related products.

Some of the vaping laws in the UK include:

  1. Restricting e-cigarette refill tanks to 2 ml or less
  2. The maximum nicotine content in e-liquids is limited to 10 ml
  3. All tobacco and vaping products to contain labels and warnings that state the dangers of smoking/ vaping
  4. All e-cigarettes and e-liquids must go through the MHRA before retailers can sell them to the public.

UK law for vaping indoors

FICH UK

In many indoor places, there are specific areas designated for smoking or vaping. However, specific indoor establishments such as hospitals, workplaces, and restaurants usually enforce a total ban on smoking indoors.

It is notable that even if smoking is banned in most restaurants or pubs, vaping is not banned since it is considered less harmful when compared to secondhand smoking.

Each establishment has its policy for vaping, so it is good to research what the procedure is beforehand.

Is it illegal to vape indoors in the UK?

Generally, indoor vaping is not blocked or prohibited in public spaces, with few exceptions. However, some public venues such as restaurants and pubs permit vaping in designated areas, bringing repercussions if not followed.

The Vaper Expo UK is one such exception where vapers from all over the nation gather to attend this two-day function. This convention is held to present consumers with the best and new vape brands available in the market.

Can you smoke electronic cigarettes inside?

Electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes are allowed to be smoked in most places indoors. Because they typically are considered less harmful to health than regular cigarettes, e-cigarettes enjoy a pass.

There are several establishments where e-cigarettes or traditional cigarettes are both banned. Some places that typically have a restriction against smoking e-cigarettes are planes, hospitals, workplaces, etc.

Can you vape in pubs?

Although most pubs have designated areas for vaping, it doesn't mean that they're free to smoke cigarettes indoors. These rules don't apply to cigarettes and vapes alike. However, pubs and bars can make their policies about vaping indoors.

Can you vape in Pubs?

It is currently banned to smoke inside pubs. This policy came about after the pub staff complained that they could not differentiate between a person smoking or vaping inside their pubs. Therefore, the best solution was to ban all types of smoking and to vape indoors.

Can you vape on a bus?

Policies for vaping on a bus varies from company to company. Usually, most bus services or any other public transportation services prohibit vaping and smoking while on board for safety reasons.

Drivers may even get fined or lose their license if they allow vaping or smoking inside the bus in some areas.

Can you vape on a plane?

Vaping is forbidden in planes for safety reasons. If you plan to use an e-cigarette on an airplane, you must follow specific rules and regulations. Some plane services allow vape pens and e-cigarettes in their carry-on baggage.

This policy ensures that it is easy for the staff to quickly and thoroughly check all your electronic devices. However, this does not mean that you can vape inside the plane under any circumstance. But you can smoke or vape in most airport-designated smoking areas.

Can you vape on a train?

In the UK, most trains impose a ban on vaping throughout the commute or at the station. Failure to comply with this ban can lead to legal action and fines as well as getting you kicked out of the train.

Some train companies such as the Southern railway, Thameslink, Eurostar, and Scot Rail have explicitly stated their ban on vaping in the UK.

According to recent reports, there have been talks about relaxing the ban on e-cigarette smoking and vaping on trains and other public spaces, including buses.

Vaping in hotels in the UK

If the hotel is a non-smoking hotel, it is best to refrain from vaping since the smoke can set off smoke alarms and land you in legal trouble. It is entirely up to the hotel policymakers if they want to allow vaping in their hotel.

However, most hotels that have rooms with balconies allow smoking and vaping. Some even have smoking areas in their hotel restaurants that let you vape or smoke in peace without disturbing the rest of the hotel guests.

E-cigarettes are also an excellent means of quitting smoking for smokers who have been smoking for years. When smokers switch to e-cigarettes, they typically quit smoking faster than those who just stop cold turkey. Furthermore, vaping is a much cheaper alternative than regular cigarettes.
